Blue Yeti vs Marantz MPM-1000: USB or XLR for your first voice-over mic?

By Lam Tran · October 8, 2026

Amazon's Studio Microphones best-seller list is topped by two very different mics: the Marantz MPM-1000 (XLR) and the Blue Yeti (USB). Which one you should buy depends on one question — do you want to own an audio interface?

The Blue Yeti: plug in and record

USB, four pickup patterns, headphone monitoring on the body. Nothing else to buy. Its weaknesses are physical: it is heavy, it hears the desk, and the stock stand puts it too far from your mouth. A $20 boom arm fixes most of that.

The Marantz MPM-1000: cleaner, but needs a box

An XLR condenser with a surprisingly clean sound for the price. But XLR means you also need an interface with 48 V phantom power — budget another $50–$100. The upside: when you upgrade later, the interface and the cables stay.

Whichever you pick, record a 30-second test in your actual room before you buy anything else. The room matters more than the microphone.
